We often tell our students that they can learn as much from making mistakes as they can from getting it right.

But not all communication failures are caused by misapplying the present perfect or being unable to pronounce the difference between long and short ‘i’. No, they are caused by people flouting or violating maxims for successful interactions suggested by the philosopher Paul Grice

The aim of this session is understanding these maxims, what flouting or violating them might involve, how to avoid that, with the aim of improving our students overall communication skills in English - and possibly beyond!

Heather Belgorodtseva

Heather Belgorodtseva is the Director of Studies for Teacher Training at BKC IH Moscow. She started teaching English as a Foreign language in 1998, and she has been a teacher, an academic manager and a teacher trainer in both London and Moscow, in private language schools and further education colleges. Currently working full time in teacher development, she has run over 100 CELTA or CELTA-analogue courses, and delivers post-CELTA training on the Advanced Methodology course, and Delta preparation courses. She also designs and runs more specialist courses, focusing on subjects such as online teaching, pronunciation or language plus methodology. She is particularly proud of her teacher training course, the BKC Trainer the Trainer course.

Heather holds Trinity CertTESOL, Delta, PGCE in Secondary School Teaching from the Institute of Education, University College London.
